Commonwealth Avenue borders this community to the north, Beacon Street to the west, Boylston Street to the south, and Crystal Lake Beach to the east. New Highland’s district has always been a residential space, and it had the highest number of housing supply from 1874 to 1911. Newton Highland started to develop further because of the railroad service’s availability within the area. The lovely town of Newton Highland is the historic center of Newton, MA. In 1986, the Newton Highlands Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It also encompasses all of the blocks under Erie, Bowdoin, and Hartford Streets at the southern area of Lincoln Street. In 1990, the Newton Highland District was enlarged. It includes all of the commercial buildings found on Lincoln Street, right in the middle of Hartford and Walnut Streets.
