Spring Hill is a centrally located suburban neighborhood in the city of Somerville, MA. The neighborhood sits north along Sommerville Avenue, bordered by Porter Square and Davis Square to the west, Prospect Hill to the east, and Powder House Square and Winter Hill to the north. Although mostly residential, there are many commercial establishments in the various main roadways in the community. Residents enjoy easy access to everything they need, including various schools, public parks, shopping, restaurants, recreation, and so much more. Development of the suburb began in 1843 as one of the first residential subdivisions in the city. Many original Colonial-style homes still stand today and make up a significant portion of available real estate in the region. Many of these older structures have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and were added in 1989. Notable inclusions are areas between Atherton, Summer, Central, and Spring Streets.
The majority of Spring Hill properties are historic homes built between the latter part of the 19th century. These homes feature a combination of Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, and New England architectural styles, creating a uniquely Boston charm throughout the community. As most of the residences in the area are a bit older, most of them have had remodeling and reconstruction through the years. Some have been converted into duplexes or multi-family residences, while others are used as low-density apartment units, which serve as excellent rental properties. The diverse set of property types in the area also mean prices vary, ranging between $500,000 for smaller condo units and up to $1.8 million for the larger houses.
